It is the process of
analyzing your potential design and problems for search engines indexing and
positioning. In other words, making your web site and its content attractive,
relevant and visible to search engines and web searchers.

There is nothing worse than having a beautiful web site with excellent written
content, though you still lose traffic or you even keep potential visitors away,
while your site cannot be found.

Before you begin optimizing your pages for Search Engines, consider that the
following search engine optimization techniques are SPAM!

* automatically generated doorway pages

* cloaking and false redirects

* keyword stuffing

* hidden text or hidden links

* pages loaded with irrelevant words

* duplicated content on multiple pages

* misspelling of well-known web sites

* unrelated and centralized link farms

* other methods that try to trick search engines

If you use one of the above techniques, you might get short term results, but
it's most likely that your site will be banned from search engines, and
therefore you will put your business at severe risk.

You will have more success, if you will optimize your site for humans, and not
machines!

Good luck with Search Engine Optimization.

More about: http://www.google.com/support/webmas...y?answer=35769

Don't miss this article too! "Why SEO should be important to you".

VALUABLE RESOURCES & TOOLS

Please report broken links or other issues, as misleading information, etc.

SEO Code of Ethics

* Search Engine Optimization Code of Ethics http://www.bruceclay.com/web_ethics.htm

Search Engines Guidelines for Webmasters

* Google Webmaster Guidelines http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html

* Yahoo! A good keyword selection process is important, choosing a good domain name for your site, link building, writing press releases and articles that promote your website, etc.
Another aspect that is important is page optimization. You need to make sure that your web site’s pages are “bot friendly”. Meaning that your pages should organize and display the information in a manner that the bots used by the major search engines (Google, Yahoo!, MSN, etc.) will recognized your targeted keywords and give more weight to your site based on them.

Here are 15 tips to optimize your pages.

1. Make sure each page have a title tag. Your targeted keywords should be as much as possible at the beginning of the tag. You can leave your web site’s name in the title, but it is recommended that you leave it at the end.
2. Have a meta keywords and descriptions. Although, not as important has other aspects, the description text is often used in the search engine results pages to describe your site. It should be well written and also not too long.
3. Meta keywords should contain your primary keywords as well as common typos and grammatical errors.
4. Use only one H1 tag by page with keywords similar to the title tag.
5. Use sub-titles (H2 and/or H3) before each paragraph or logical section of your page. This helps readability and helps define your content for search engines.
6. Use bullet and numbered lists and bold text to clean up the page’s content and make it easier to read.
7. Use text links as much as possible. Image and Flash links should be avoided when possible.
8. Include a site map with links to each of your web site’s pages.
9. Make sure each page is unique. Don’t duplicate your content!
10. Write content for your visitors, not for the bots! If not, your site might become difficult to read and it could get penalized.
11. Images are never read by the bots. Avoid using images for text and titles. The same goes for Flash.
12. When using images, always add an alt tag to describe the image. The alt tag should contain keywords related to the image and the page.
13. Your page’s content should always contain some of your keywords. Always make sure the content of your pages remain relevant.
14. Your home page should have links to the most important pages of your site. These links should also contain your keywords.
15. Your site should be easy to navigate for visitors and for bots. Place links at the bottom of each of the web site’s pages to the important sections of your site. Also place a link to your site map so it is easily accessible to bots.

SEO for everyone

There are many facets to SEO and the search engines continually change their
methods of indexing sites to help prevent the same sites from staying up in the
ranks all the time.

Here are some strategies we have personally used with our web design firm:

1. Google AdWords. This is an excellent and cost effective method of getting
good search results. You set the maximum daily amount you would like to spend on
your key words and phrases. Within the first month we were getting more client
contacts through using AdWords.

2. Overture Keywords. This is a lot like AdWords, but we found that their
system did not really allow you to set a daily limit to how much you wanted to
spend and it quickly got out of hand with some of the phrases we had chosen!
Still, it was pretty cost effective in the grand scheme of things.

3. Yahoo Regional Directories. Once you are able to get your site indexed by
the Yahoo Regional Directories, I think you stay in there for good! We've been
in there for years now and continue to get clients who found us through this
directory. (And it is free to submit your site.)

4. Keywords / Description / Alt Tags / Title Tags / Page Content. All the big
SEO companies rely heavily on these 5 things - all of which are contained in the
code of your web pages. However, with a little research, you could do these
yourself (or have it done by your web designer). A few great tools to help you
with this task are: Overture Keyword Selector Tool (http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/),
Google Suggestion Tool (http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en), Meta Tag
Analyzer (http://www.iboost.com/tools/meta_tag_analyzer.htm), and Keyword
Density Analyzer (http://www.keyworddensity.com/).

The main benefit to hiring a professional SEO company is that they work for
you to constantly update your keywords, etc. and submit your URL to search
engines. They know exactly how many of each keyword to use, etc. And this is
often a service worth paying for if optimization is a real concern in your
industry. A good SEO company will also stay up on what the search engines are
doing and change their tactics accordingly. They will also never use an
"illegal" tactics that could get you banned from the search engine. Be wary of
companies that "guarantee top 10 placement". I recommend http://www.submitsolutions.com.

5. Online Directories. Submitting your website URL to free online directories
is a great avenue of promotion. One way you can find directories is to use
Google or another search engine and type in "(type of your business) online
directories". Some that come up may ask for a small amount to list your site. If
they do, you should always contact them and ask them for more information such
as how many unique visits their directories get per month to see if the price is
a good value.

6. Open Directory Project. http://www.dmoz.org The ODP is one of the main
sources the the Googlebot uses to find new websites. This is a human-maintained
directory - meaning that when you submit your URL, an actual person reviews your
submission to decide if the site is appropriate, etc. It may take some time to
get your site indexed by the ODP, but once it is, you should not have to keep
sending your links.

7. Blog. Having a Blog on your website is a great way to attract visitors to
your site with fresh content. And the search engines love content rich blog
pages. There are free services out there such as http://www.blogger.com, http://www.blog-city.com,
http://www.livejournal.com and many more that allow you to sign up for a free
blog. Of course the best way to blog to have the blog "software" actually
installed on your site. This is something your web designer/programmer could do
for you. I highly recommend sBlog (http://servous.se/) as a free php based Blog
script (you will need php and a MySQL database installed with your web hosting
service to run this).

8. Submit to Google and Yahoo. These two are the top dogs in the search
engine world and both still accept FREE submissions. For Yahoo, you must go
through the categories until you find the most appropriate one for your website.
For Google, you can go to the following URL to submit your site: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

9. Print advertising. Many companies forget that print advertising is still a
very valid way to get visitors to your website. Although this can get costly,
even having your URL printed on your business cards, letterheads and envelopes
is considered print advertising.

10. Be the best you can be. It sounds simple, but a lot of people get so
wrapped up in SEO that they neglect the quality of their website. Remember that
your website reflects your business and should offer a professional, high
quality appearance and useful content. No matter what your business is, your
visitors will be more inclined to stick around or make a purchase if your site
is easy to navigation, has useful information, and looks professional.

10 ways for effective search engine marketing

If they want to have success, companies should do everything they can to ensure that their SEO firm doesn't provide lousy service. Here are 10 tips to keep in mind:

1. Be realistic.

Don't waste your time or the SEO firm's expertise by arguing about broad search terms. Don't say you want to be in the Top 10 for "e-commerce." The SEO firm should ask: "E-commerce and what else? E-commerce consultants? Please be specific."

2. Think long-term.

If you can't help yourself and you want broad search terms, such as "toys," think through what it may take to pull that off. Variations on your favorite term may be best in the short term. If you start looking a year or two out, then make sure there aren't site design, programming and link popularity flaws.

3. Be open with log files.

Don't shield log files from the SEO firm. Admit if your web analytics capability is poor. How can the SEO firm do a good job if your host company can't provide decent statistics, such as the number of visitors from search engines and the actual search terms they use?

4. Change text.

If an SEO firm wants to change text, give the consultant lots of room. If a graphic can be modified so the words appear as text, be open-minded about the change. Chances are, it won't hurt the overall look of the web site. SEO professionals grit their teeth when clients say they want rankings and then resist change.

5. Don't sit on recommendations.

You may end up discouraging the SEO firm you're paying if you hire them and then fail to review their suggestions.

6. Reply to e-mails, voicemails and other communications.

If an SEO firm contacts you, especially for a scheduled meeting, make a point to return the e-mail or call. Really, it's a good idea to be available for strategic conference calls.

7. Stick to the program.

Don't ask the SEO firm to optimize the web site and then expect them to provide Pay-Per-Click (PPC) guidance as well. If you can't handle PPC on your own, pay the experts.

8. Keep statistics in perspective.

With many search terms and engines, it's always going to be possible for some keywords not to rank. Don't get hung up on what search terms didn't pop in the Top 30. Focus on your traffic growth and conversions.

9. Know your limits.

SEO firms appreciate informed clients - to a limit. Read the articles. Pick up an SEO book. Keep up with the news. But don't hire an SEO expert and then tell them you're an SEO expert. For example, you may be excited to learn about all of the SEO devices that could be at your disposal. Don't blame the SEO firm for failing to use them all at once. Measured, gradual changes are best.

10. Take your company name out of title tags.

Do yourself a favor and make title tags available for search terms, not your long company name. Only keep it if it's short and useful from a title tag proximity and density standpoint.

How your keywords working for you

Built my website, it's perfect. My chosen subject of the website is Computer Support Services. Of course this is an example, but moving along, what should my keywords be?

Keywords are what people type into a search engine to find something on the internet. These words are what drive user requests.

Words to live by I like to call them. Why? Because on the internet your website will live and die by the words you use, or the words I use when you hire me to optimize your site.

How many words should I use?
What should they say?
How many phrases should there be?
What's a phrase?

First off, let's cover what a keyword is. A keyword is a word or collection of words used to describe your website. For those doing their own website design these words are applied in what is called a meta tag such as the following:

meta name="keywords" content="these words, would describe, your site"

keywords should say something about your website. They should also directly reflect the content of your site. They should not be random words that have nothing to do with your site, or you. If they are, you can expect that your page ranking will fall rather than rise. Of course, you will still have to submit or resubmit your website to keep your page in the eyes of the various search engines.

The number of words and phrases should be no more than 21-22, or a combination of the two. I have seen sites that had over 780 keywords, but no content to support them. Even if there was content there to support that large number of words, it's fruitless to have that many words. Most search engines will ignore anything over the 22 words limit.

A phrase is defined as more than one word. "Real Estate Sales" is a phrase. "Real, Estate, Sales" is a collection of keywords. Both of these if used in a search would render completely different results.

Short, to the point, and using some of the keywords that describe your service or product. Here it's Auto Repair Service, it's New, and it's Terrific.

Description - The second most important item on the page. Make this relevant to the content (typing) that you have on your webpage:

Bob's New Terrific Auto Repair Service is the most experienced auto repair shop on the coast. Servicing All types of autos from 9am - 5pm 7 days a week. We offer early bird service on Fridays and Free Car Washes to all customers who pay by cash.

KEYWORDS -
Select about 22 words/phrases that descibe your product or service, and separate them with a comma. This line would look like: auto, automobile, service, terrific, new, free car wash, pay with cash.

How do I find these keywords? Use the following tools:

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

This tool known as the Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool is one of the most widely used methods of finding out what subjects people are searching for. What products they are searching for, what services they search for.

Enter your words like this: star wars or use something like business plan sample and when you click the button, you will be presented with a listing of how many times that word or words was searched for in the past month. Picking the higher ranked ones will be good for your site.

How does keyword selection help sales? It helps in the sense that by selecting the correct keywords, your site will be more visible, found more often in searches, and as a result of more visitors, eventually you will get more sales. Please make sure that the BUY IT NOW message on your website is clear. If not, all the optimization in the world will not help your sales increase.

To get noticed from google

So you want to get listed on Google? And you want a GOOD listing on Google?
"But my website is not popular and is too new to be noticed by Google," you say?

There are couple ways to get listed on Google. First, there's the wrong way.
Or should I say the way that takes an extra long time, which also happens to be
the way that's not as popular with Google. In other words, it's the way that
might get you listed but NOT anywhere large amounts of people will see it. So, I
see that method as useless.

Google has a place for you to add your URL for your site to be placed in que
for crawling. It's at http://www.google.com/addurl.html.

I haven't known anyone to get great results by using this one method. This is
because of the mechanics involved with what follows after. You add your site URL
in the cute little box, your site URL is then placed in line for the GoogleBot
to crawl. At this point in time, your site will probably be behind millions of
other pages. There is much room for things to happen and your site NOT get
crawled by the GoogleBot. And even if it gets crawled, it's not for sure that
Google will even indexed the site to begin with. And if it does index your site,
there's no telling where it will end up. Probably NOT on the first three pages
of search results, which is virtually useless.

Let's now talk about the RIGHT way to be indexed by Google.

The best way to get indexed by Google, which is also the preferred way
according to their algorithms, is for them to crawl another site first. When The
GoogleBot crawls another site and finds your link within that site, it then
follows that link to your site.

This is the way you get popular with Google, or work your way up toward the
top of the search results. So in order to get good results with Google, you need
links at other sites pointing toward you. In order to get even better results
with Google, you need to either increase the sites that link back to you to an
astronomical amount, or have less links pointing toward you, but from more
popular sites.

So if you could somehow get a link pointing to you, say from Amazon.com, that
one link would be equivalent to more than a couple dozen links pointing toward
you from separate, less popular sites. If you could manage to get a dozen or so
larger sites to link toward you, this would be equivalent to perhaps thousands
of sites linking to you, that are less popular. Google likes that. Google
promotes you up the search ladder for accomplishing that.

So how you get these larger sites to link to you?

I'll tell you right now. You can't email Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates and ask to
exchange links. That's insane and practically impossible. But there's an easier
way.

First, go to discussion sites and forums and participate in relevant
discussions. Simply place a hyperlink pointing back to you in your signature. I
must mention here that you should not go to discussion sites and forums and
simply add your link and say "Go here!" That won't work and will get the forum
moderator angry. It's also a good way to get blacklisted. You need to
participate in discussions that are relevant to the board and important to all
reading the board. If you do this no one minds if you include your hyperlink
within your signature.

Another way to establish links back to you on the Internet is to write
quality articles about subjects that are interesting to your target market.
Again, you need to try and create quality content within your articles. Readers,
and especially editors, can spot writers trying to receive free publicity a mile
away.

It doesn't take much extra effort to do a little research, come to your own
conclusions, perhaps solve a problem, and record your results on paper. Perhaps
you could write down the steps you took to research a subject or solve a
problem. When you provide quality content that is interesting and helpful to
your readers, you can place your name and a hyperlink to your web site at the
end of the article. This is standard procedure.

At this point let's remind ourselves why we're doing all this. It's to solve
the problem of how you're going to get bigger and more popular websites to link
to your website.

Now, keep writing articles. As you write more and more articles, you will get
better. As you get better, more editors will pick up your articles and include
them at their sites. As more of your articles are included, you'll establish
more links pointing back to you through the resource box. As you establish more
links pointing back to your site, you will solve the problem that we established
at the beginning of this article.

SEO link building tutorial

This video instructs you about the Search engine optimisation using link building
.

4 SEO tips for your home based business

The results of this tactics were good .

1. Selected New Keywords, But Kept The Strategy.

This meant that when I earlier had used for instance the term Internet Home Based Business, I picked a new keyword, which meant the same, but reached different niche, like Online Home Based Business.

Then I also tried, how plural forms from my present keywords would look like.

When I earlier used Internet Home Based Business Opportunity, I found out that Online Home Based Business Opportunities fulfilled my requirements.

So I was able to use my old list of keywords by changing the word internet into online and by checking whether plural forms are possible.

2. Set A Realistic Target To Reach First Page Ranking.

I have used long tail keywords for years and set the target to reach the first page ranking, not the first place, for my online home based business opportunities.

The reason is that it just takes too much effort to try to get the pole position and because several first page positions can be easier kept than the first place.

So despite of the fact, that the first place would bring more traffic, I saw the first page better because this tactics is not so sensitive to competition but still works fine during a long period of time.

3. Made The Competition Research.

The page rank is all about competition. We all owners of online home based business opportunities are competing about the favor of Google ranking software with the amount and the quality of backlinks.

This is a simple reason, why I just had to research the backlinks of the first page sites to be able to see, if my site has realistic chances to reach that page.

4. Used Long Tail Keywords Including Rather Four Or More Words.

The reason for this operation was simple. The long tail keywords include several related keywords and thus cover many niches at the same time.

They have also lower competition, which means that my online home based business opportunities can keep the first page positions longer.

Because the competition with the long tail keywords is milder, I have to check the page ranks of my online home based business opportunities after every two months approximately.

Search Engine Marketing firms

Business professionals in marketing are being helped by Search Engine Marketing firms to optimize their website traffic. It can be a complicated endeavor but what is more often misunderstood is how important search engine optimization is for a successful online business.

Consumers spend millions of dollars every day on products purchased online. The web atmosphere of today's internet has provided an incredible opportunity for business of every type and size to increase their profits with a solid web presence. A professional website is one of the most important tools in implementing that web presence. However, without the ability to find you, customers may never see your website no matter how attractive it is.

When people look for a product online the first place they go to is a search engine. There are hundreds of search engines that are used regularly by consumers all over the world but they all operate on the same basic principles. A visitor types in a word, or set of words, that they feel best describes what they are looking for. The search engine site then scans its database for the most accurate matches for that word or words.

Your site needs to be on the resulting list for the key words that best describe your product.

Studies have proven that sites ranking below the top five entries on a search engine's results page rarely get visited and sites showing up beyond the first page of listings almost never get traffic from a search engine. The average online consumer just isn't that patient, and they feel that top listed companies are more likely to have a solid reputation, a lot of satisfied customers and better deals. In other words they have a perceived sense of value for companies that are ranked in the top five search engine results and it doesn't matter how those companies got there.

How to get there:

SEO, or search engine optimization can be a complex field; it certainly can be a tedious and time consuming! SEO also requires some skill for accurate implementation. There are many details involved in properly using and applying known techniques, but the basics to drive visitors to your site are:

Defining the best set of single key words and key word phrases that accurately describe your product or service

Learning how to incorporate those words and phrases into web content on your site's pages so that search engines can find you and rate your content for its relevancy

Getting outside links to your website from other reputable sites

Understanding the value, meanings, and proper use of meta tags

This is one area of your online business you cannot afford to take chances with. Inappropriately used meta tags, key words and phrases can actually damage your credibility with a search engine, as can links coming in from bad, or mismatched sites. Our article White Hat vs Black Hat here addresses this issue. Make sure your SEO is done properly by an experienced professional for the best results and optimum traffic.

Monetize your blog

Riding the Wave

Over the past few years, there have been quite a few incredible advancements in information technology. Of the most famous of these advancements is the rise of Google to search engine kingpin and Amazon's ascendence to the top-level of internet retail.

In order to maintain their positions at the top, both of these companies, and others, look to smaller websites for help. This is where you, and a good website building software package, come into the picture.

You've probably seen their ads all over the place. While reading through a blog, you'll see a sidebar advertisement for Amazon products that have been found to complement the lives of many people who are interested in the topic of that blog. Perhaps even the insertion of a Google Adsense ad linking to companies compatible with the blog's content.

Those advertisements don't happen by accident. It is a result of the savvy of that website's producer.

Making Money

The good software package can provide you with a professional looking website. A search engine like Google uses an algorithm (mathemetical language) that factors in huge range of variables to rank pages. Many would consider backlinks to site by other sites as possibly the most important other than the content itself.
By using an effective strategy for getting backlinks without using spam, you can eventually achieve the top rankings you desire. Using spamming techniques may get backlinks to your site but they are usually not quality links and search engine crawlers these days can figure out what you are doing. Search engines have penalties for websites that use spamming techniques to increase backlink frequency.
Here are some tips for getting backlinks without using spam:
Informative sites will get natural backlinks
For starters, don't rely on backlinks to market your site. Your over-reliance on them may cause you to get aggressive in getting backlinks, search engine companies may start to be suspicious of you. Remember, a web site does not necessarily replace the need for proven marketing techniques such as word-of-mouth. A good site will naturally gain links from other sites because web masters see your page/s as being important and it would help their vistors be more informed on a topic/subject.
Free and paid for directories
You can submit your site to the many free directories that are out there. Many provide links on pages that have some PR (Page Rank). PR is important in that higher ranked pages are considered more important in the eyes of Google (the most important search engine) and ranges from 0 to 10. Getting a backlink from a high ranked page gives the impression your page is also important because it has been given a "vote" by the high ranked page.
Ask for a reciprocal link
These is essentially a request by yourself to other websmasters if they would exchange links with you which would be mutually beneficial to both of you. This is usually done by sending an email to a site owner requesting the link and explaining why you would like a link. For a full explanation on the methods of exchanging links with another site and and how to get high PR sites to link with you, you should read this article.
Whe you ask another site for a link exchange, make sure it is a single link of one page. Avoid getting sitewide links. These are links that appear on every page of another site using the same anchor link (link title). These are a dead giveaway to a search engine because it looks highly unnatural and spammy.
Backlinks in Forums
If you post messages to forums and message boards and include your website in the signature, make sure that you are contributing quality posts related to the message thread subject. Search engine crawlers can figure out when links are not relevant to the posts and you may get tagged as a spammer.
Many times a provider of free website templates will allow you to use their templates royalty-free provided you include a link back to their site on your customized version of it.
Ask the webmaster of the site if he can include your link on his site in exchange for some price reduction or other compensation you may provide. Freelance forum and job sites will sometimes offer the freelancer a reduction in their fee in exchange for the coder including a link back to them on the freelancer's web site.
In any case, make absolutely sure that the strategy you choose will not make a search engine suspicious that you are spamming. If you even think that your strategy has a hint of spamming, don't do it. You may never get included into a top ranking on a search engine.

How to get backlinks

How to get back links to your site without spamming

Every owner of a web site wants his site at the top of search engine results but getting there is no easy task. Yahoo search queries make up approximately 28% of all search engine traffic. And just in raw traffic reported by Alexa rankings, Yahoo! demolishes competitors such as Google and MSN. The Y! web portal has continued to offer its visitors comprehensive searching capabilities through its evolving algorithm. Search optimizers would be wise to consider its attributes and quirks, which Jennifer Sullivan reviews in the second part of this series.

Yahoo has changed its search engine several times drastically. Yahoo is striving to produce relevant results to its searchers in areas that computer algorithms simply fall short, areas like opinions and personalized results. For example, “What is the best online electronics site?” or “Who has the best Italian cuisine in town?” are representative of questions that would be an opinion that a searcher would be interested in, but is difficult for a search engine algorithm to put them in touch with. Personal results are indicative of a user’s personal preferences, and not based solely upon the opinion of the majority, and serendipity brings to mind the notion of becoming familiar with the searcher’s own tastes, such as what might be personally relevant to a user, or something family and friends would be a better source of information regarding, rather than a machine. Searching for the term “apple” doesn’t always mean that a user is looking for Macintosh computers.

Yahoo! Social Search

With this in mind, Yahoo introduced Social Search, called My Web 2.0. It is a new kind of search engine – a social search engine – that complements web search by enabling users to search the knowledge and expertise of their friends and community in addition to the web.
The technology powering the social search is called MyRank. According to Yahoo’s My Web 2.0 FAQ, “MyRank leverages all the advances in algorithmic search and combines these advances with a very simple idea - your definition of a 'better answer' may be very different than somebody else's definition. The MyRank technology powering My Web 2.0 enables you to tap into the knowledge of the people you know, and leverage this knowledge to find better answers that are more relevant to you. Friends, colleagues, and other contacts in your community are invaluable sources of information and advice in the offline world. These are the people that share your interests, work in your industry, live in your neighborhood, and have potentially searched for many of the same topics as you - along with topics that you never thought of in relation to the people you know. By fusing the power of algorithmic search with the ability to tap into your community, MyRank technology enables you to find better, more relevant answers for you.”
The way they accomplish this is by adding the ability to tag, save, and then share information with other people, as well as obtain the information that other people wish to share with you. Instead of simply book-marking a page, you have the enhanced ability to tag a bookmarked page with keywords you assign to it. This allows a user to comment on pages they find useful, then give extra information about it to others in the community the user builds. Then, when web searches are performed, not only algorithmic findings are used, but also the information in the personal tags saved by the user, which provides personalized search results based on the shared knowledge of the people they trust.

Top 10 link building techniques

Top 10 link building techniques
1) Link Exchange
2) Buying Links
3) Article Marketing
4) Blog Posting
5) Forum Posting/Signatures
6) Press Release
7) Directory Submission
8) Social Bookmarking
9) Widgets/Link Bait
10) Word of Mouth

SEO Optimisation for flash related sites

I realize lots of people do not know if flash animation can be optimized or not. So I decided to do a research online about flash optimization.I found out that Adobe had teamed with search industry leaders to improve search results of dynamic Web content and rich internet application (RIAs). With the said team up, search engines can now provide more relevant automatic search rankings of the millions of RIA’s and other dynamic content that run in Adobe Flash Player.According to the article, Google has already begun to roll out the Adobe Flash Player technology incorporated into its search engine and with this, Google can now better read the content on the sites that use Adobe Flash technology. It will be a great help to internet users in finding more relevant information when doing searches.

But of course, Yahoo won’t let Google alone receive the credit. Yahoo had been doing some tweaking in their algorithm to support searchable SWF and is closely working with Adobe to determine the best possible implementation.
There are lots of designers, developers and even SEO specialist who have long been frustrated because search engines could not access information within their content that is created with Flash technology. Oh well, I think this is a great news for guys who love flash animation!

SEO terminologies

The basic terminology of SEO-(Search Engine Optimization). Here is a compiled list of search engine and promotion related terms...........

Adwords - This is the Pay Per Click advertising program offered by Google.

Adsense - Contextual advertising by Google. Website publishers earn a portion of the advertising revenue for placing Google sponsored links on their site.

Algorithm: The search engine program that ranks sites based on certain criteria. Google has over 100 different ranking criteria that sites need to meet.

Automated Submissions: Services that use a web based tool or software to submit sites to search engines, free for all pages, and directories. CM SEO does not recommend using these services, these submissions can be viewed by the receiving party as spam.

Bid for click: A search engine under which you bid for your site to be ranked under a keyword. See Pay Per Click (PPC) and Paid Placement (PP).

Code: The background code that runs a web site. As well as HTML, this can include, JavaScript, ASP, PHP, JSP, Coldfusion and more.

Click popularity: a measure of how often a listing presented by a search engine is clicked. Some search engines and directories will rank a site higher on their results pages if the site proves to be popular among searchers.

Cloaking: also known as "stealth," involves serving a specific page to each search engine spider and a different one to human visitors. In most cases, frowned upon by search engines.

Comment tag: html code that describes or documents content. Most search engines ignore the content of comment tags.

Dead link: An Internet link which does not lead to a page or site. This usually occurs when a server is down, the page has moved, or it no longer exists.

Domain: A sub-set of internet addresses. Domains are hierarchical, and lower-level domains often refer to particular web sites within a top-level domain. The most significant part of the address comes at the end - typical top-level domains are .com, .net, .edu, .gov, .org.

Directory: directories are built from submissions made by website owners, and generally arrange site listings hierarchically. Yahoo! is the best known example.

Doorway page: a web page created solely to achieve high ranking in search engines for particular keywords, and perhaps for a specific engine. Today's doorway pages should contain valuable and useful content related to your site, and be fully linked to the site, and so are often referred to as "information pages."

Dynamic html: web pages generated on demand by data in databases or using similar technology. Can create ranking problems because a search engine's spider may not retrieve relevant content.

FFA Site: A so-called "free for all links" page, which is created for the sole purpose of compiling links. Submission software or companies that claim to submit your site to hundreds or thousands of "search engines" actually use these for most of that number. FFA sites are essentially worthless in terms of generating traffic, and links from them will count nothing towards your site's link popularity. Basically, they're a waste of time.

Frames: Some sites have pages that are made up of multiple HTML pages. Typically the navigation will be on one page and the content on another. You can tell if you scroll down the page and the navigation remains static. Frames are bad for a sites search engine promotion

Hand Submissions: A service to develop appropriate titles and descriptions for submission to directories, search engines, and advertising sites. The submission is often unique for each directory, being sure to be compliant with all guidelines. CM SEO always offers hand submissions and has great success in getting relevant listings in appropriate directories.

Hidden text: Text that is visible to the search engine spiders but not to site visitors. Used to add extra keywords in the page without actually adding content to a site. Most search engines will penalize Web sites which use hidden text.

Hit: In the context of visitors to web pages, a hit (or site hit) is a single access request made to the server for either a text file or a graphic. If, for example, a web page contains ten buttons constructed from separate images, a single visit from someone using a web browser with graphics switched on (a "page view") will involve eleven hits on the server.
In the context of a search engine query, a hit is a measure of the number of web pages matching a query returned by a search engine or directory.

Home page: The main page of a Web site.

HTML (HyperText Markup Language): The coding language that all Web sites use to exist on the Internet.

Hyperlinks: Hyperlinks are used to link one or more documents together.

Impression: A single display of an online advertisement.

Inbound link: Links that direct users to another Web site. When a user arrives at a site from another site, that link is known as an inbound link.

Informational page: a content-filled web page created to focus on particular keywords. Differs from a "doorway page" in that is wholly integrated into the site and is useful to human visitors, while a traditional "doorway page" is aimed only at search engines.

Invisible text: using a font color the same or close to the color of the background of a page, in an attempt to allow the content to be indexed by search engines while not being visible to humans. To search engines, this is spam.

IP delivery or IP-based delivery: the technique of serving a particular page in response to a page request from a specific IP address. Used in cloaking; a search engine is identified by the IP address it is using, and a page customized for that search engine is served.

Keyword: A word used to find pages when conducting a search.

Keywords: Due to abuse by many Web sites in the past, search engines have reduced the importance of the keywords meta tag when ranking a Web page for keyword relevance. Many have actually decided to not consider the keywords tag altogether. While it has reduced in significance, it is still an important meta tag to include in your Web pages.

Keyword density: Keyword density is the ratio of a keyword or key phrases to the total number of words on that page. Keyword density is one of the most critical aspects of successful search engine optimization.

Keyword phrase: A phrase used to find pages when conducting a search.

Keyword frequency: Keyword frequency is the number of times keywords occur in the text on a given page. Search engines want to see more than one repetition of a keyword in your text to make sure it's not an isolated case.

Keyword prominence: The general location of a keyword or phrase in relation to the overall text on that page. You'll want to make sure your important keywords appear early in your Web site copy and that they draw attention to themselves.

Keyword research: Researching the most relative and popular keywords for a given site.

Keyword Spamming: Deliberate repetition of keywords in a page by using invisible or tiny text to increase keyword density. This is banned by search engines.

Link popularity: Search engines often use link popularity as part of their ranking criterion. In simple terms, link popularity is the measurement of the number of other Web sites that include a link to your Web site on theirs. Each search engine, depending on their specific algorithms, determines it differently.

Link analysis: a measure of the quality and relevance of the set of links pointing to a given site; contrast with link popularity.

Link Farms: sites created and maintained solely for the purpose of constructing links between member sites. Should be avoided as a violation of most search engines' policies; their use won't build your site's link popularity, and may result in a ranking penalty.

META refresh tag: automatically replaces the current page with a different one within the website, or possibly offsite. In general, use of refresh tags is discouraged or penalized by search engines.

META tag: html tag in the header section of a web page, intended to offer content to search engines. Among them are the keyword and description tags, but these days most true search engines de-emphasize or completely ignore META tags.

Mirror sites: Sites designed as duplicates of an original site, but are hosted on a different server. Link cloaking and doorway pages, the creation of mirror sites is a recognized spam tactic and violators will be penalized by many of the major search engines.

ODP - Open Directory Project: The largest human edited directory on the Internet. The Open Directory provides listings for free but only for qualified sites and because editors are volunteers, wait times can be lengthy.

Outbound link: A link to a site outside of your own.

Page Rank: See also Link Popularity. A numerical rating of a site developed by Google as part of it's algorithms for determining search engine listings. To view page rank requires installing the Google tool bar in your browser. Yahoo also utilizes Page Rank calculations.

PPC: Pay Per Click. This is an advertising option in which the advertiser has typically a small textual ad on a search engine site and pays only if a user clicks on the link in the ad.

PFI: Pay for Inclusion. This is a fee charged by a search engine to be spidered on a periodic basis to be included in the search engine results. Yahoo has a service that is a combination of PFI and PPC.

Reciprocal link: An exchange of links between two sites.

Relevancy: how closely related a particular page is to the search term requested.

Re-index: How often a search engine updates its index. Google updates its index once a month.

Reputation: related to link popularity, a page will score highest for reputation when it is linked to by pages from other sites which themselves are highly ranked. Well-known sites recognized as "authoritive" are given high reputation scores on their own; it's for this reason that a link to your site from something like cnn.com would be very valuable.

Search engine: A search engine is a database system designed to index and categorize internet addresses, otherwise known as URLs (for example, http://www.yourdomain.com).

Search engine marketing: encompasses several forms of marketing products and services on the internet through management of information presented by search engines and directories. Included are such elements as site optimization, and the purchase and placement of advertisements.

Search engine optimization (SEO): These are the techniques used to improve a Web page's results in a search.

Search engine positioning: the process of managing a page or site's positioning in the search engines.

Selective delivery: the technique answering browser's page request with a specific page selected via an automated process based on some piece of information gained from the browser. For example, reading the browser's language setting may allow a page in that language to be served. Similar to IP-based delivery.

SERP: A "search engine results page," the page of site listings that a search engine returns in response to a user's entry of a search query. Often used in discussion of the way such a page is laid out, for example: "Overture listings are the first sites presented on Yahoo's SERPs."

Spam: as it applies to search engines, any attempt to submit or place deceptive information, or to "trick" the search engine into placing a page in an inaccurate position.

Spider: A software program used by search engines to crawl the Web, storing URLs and indexing the keywords and text of pages. Spiders are also referred to as crawlers or robots.

Stop word: common words, or words considered by search engines to be irrelevant, are left out by search algorithms. Examples are "and," "the," etc. Generally, a stop word in a query is treated as a "wild card;" that is, the returned results usually won't be exactly the same as if the word had been left out of the query entirely.

Theme: a relatively recent change in search engine ranking algorithms, theme-based engines essentially try to determine what a page is "about" — and to compare it to other pages that seem to be related to the same topic — and rank it highly for certain keywords that are determined to be related to that page theme.

Traffic: The actual visitors to a Web page or Web site.

Unique Visitor: A real visitor to a web site. Web servers record the IP addresses of each visitor, and this is used to determine the number of real people who have visited a web site. If for example, someone visits twenty pages within a web site, the server will count only one unique visitor.

URL: The Uniform Resource Locator is used to specify the address of Web sites and Web pages.

Word stemming: a practice used to some search engines in which searches will return results for words based upon a particular stem. For example, a search for "develop" might return pages containing the words "development" or "developer."

Kellin Keller - EzineArticles.com Expert Author

Thanks and regards
WildStone

SEO beginners guide -2

Page Design –
Is the page MarketablePage Design is also the important. The directories comes in two flavors, free and paid. The free directories usually require link exchange, which is fine but then you should also remember that if you have many links on your web page, search engines can reduce your page ranks or rank on search engine result. So basically too much of anything is not good. Again in case of paid listing make sure that the page rank of the directory is high and it has good traffic.

Secondly, many search engines also provide sponsored links. Therefore you can pay to get listing at the top of the result page. However, you have to pay for every visitor sent to your website. This way you can get traffic very quickly.

Thirdly, you need to submit your articles to different article submission sites like Digg.
